Rumors about a Minecraft Movie have been circulating for quite some time, but until recently, there was little reliable information online. Finally, things have become clear, and the full-length movie is set to be released on April 4, 2025! In the meantime, we’ve been treated to a trailer.
“Minecraft”: What will the movie adaptation of the most popular computer game be about?
The development of a film based on “Minecraft” was first announced back in 2012. However, progress stalled after the initial pitch, and due to the repeated failures of other major video game adaptations, Mojang decided to hold off on selling the movie rights to Hollywood. Eventually, Warner Bros., who became the film’s official distributor, found a director—Rob McElhenney, a television showrunner. But with production slowing down significantly, McElhenney soon left, followed by several screenwriters and producers. As a result, the Minecraft movie’s future became uncertain once again.
However, in the early 2020s, following the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, Warner Bros. producers revisited the project, seeing it as a potential blockbuster to bring in huge box-office revenue worldwide. Minecraft entered active development again, this time with no turning back. Jared Hess, known for several independent American films, was appointed as the new director, and the cast began to fill up with big Hollywood names. The producers also confirmed that the movie would be a live-action film, not an animated one.
Around the same time, Jason Momoa concluded negotiations with the studio, securing the lead role. Later, Emma Myers (known for her role in the recent “Wednesday”), Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hanson, and the film’s standout star, Jack Black, who will play Steve—the game’s protagonist—joined the cast. In April 2024, filming wrapped, and just a few days ago, the first teaser trailer was released online, offering fans a glimpse of the highly anticipated adaptation. So, what can we expect from the film?
It’s also known that the Minecraft movie will be packed with Easter eggs for the game’s most dedicated fans. A group of humans arriving in the “blocky” world will encounter various hostile (and friendly) mobs, learn how to craft their first weapons, build homes from scratch, and gradually fill their inventory with newly acquired items. True to the original game’s survival mode, the movie promises to be a larger, more entertaining, and expensive blockbuster, with a rumored budget of around $150 million.
At this stage, the teaser trailer on Warner Bros.’ official YouTube channel has reached nearly one million dislikes. Viewers have reacted negatively to the producers’ decisions, and insiders have further fueled tensions by reporting the film’s poor quality following numerous test screenings. Despite this, Warner Bros. remains confident in the movie’s success—after all, it’s an adaptation of one of the best-selling and most beloved games in modern history, and the most anticipated movie for gamers in the past decade. However, Minecraft’s popularity has been declining, and it remains to be seen if this will impact the film’s box-office performance.

What should we expect from the Minecraft movie? At the very least, a fan-service-heavy exploration of the beloved blocky universe. The creators have worked to translate the game’s unique charm into the screenplay, though they may have overdone it with caricature-like elements and the inclusion of highly recognizable stars (let’s be honest, Jack Black contrasts sharply with the original image of Steve). We’ll have to wait for the full trailer, set to release early next year, to make any final judgments. The movie itself will premiere in early April 2025—thirteen years after Mojang first announced plans for a film adaptation.
